Fitness Assessment Program
We provide your health and fitness coordinator with tools and information required to conduct a fitness assessment in order to promote health and wellness within your department.
NFPA 1583 – Chapter 6
We supply your department a free workout program tailored for group fitness with minimal equipment. Peer fitness trainers can modify each session according to individual needs.

We will provide health promotion education through our blog with updated information on general health and wellness plus cardiovascular and occupational risk injury reduction.

We provide the tools for your health and fitness coordinator to conduct confidential assessment data on each member to be shared only with department physician or administration.

Aerobic Capacity: Cooper Distance tests and easy to calculate VO2 Max estimation
Body Composition: WHtR measurement to calculate obesity related cardiovascular risks
Grip Strength: Dead hang test to measure hand and forearm strength and endurance
Power: Burst test to measure explosive power of the lower body and quick firing muscles
Muscular Endurance: push up, pull up and plank test to measure upper body strength and endurance
Flexibility: Trunk test to measure back, hamstring, shoulder and hip flexibility/mobility
Balance: Stork stand test to measure stabilizer muscle condition used for everyday functionality
Any updates or changes will be announced in our Facebook support group Firefighter Furnace HERO Athletes. This also where you can ask questions, post videos of the assessment and present your fire departments overall assessment score to see how your organization matches with others.

Does this cost anything?
No, this assessment program and shift workouts are 100% free. We do offer paid programs firefighters can purchase individually to do in place of the shift workout based on their specific needs.
What steps do I take to get started?
All you need to do is print off the program and then make a copy of the Firefighter Furnace Fitness Assessment Data Sheet for each individual participating. Then create teams of two so each partner can take turns either completing an event or scoring the other.
how often do I complete this assessment?
You can complete the assessment at anytime that meets the needs of your department. However, we will post it as the daily workout in our free HERO Shift Program at the beginning of every March and September.
How long does the assessment take
It can be done quickly or throughout the day. At Firefighter Furnace we suggest implementing a fitness day at least twice a year where you complete the assessment then reward the department with a cookout and downtime.
Where to I find a pre-assessment health questionnaire
This will be created by your health and fitness coordinator with approval by your fire chief and department physician. We created the tools to perform a physical assessment, it’s up to you to get it approved to be compliant with NFPA.
Where can I find more information about this assessment?
We created a support group for all firefighters who are interested in health and wellness. All you need to do is join our Facebook group Firefighter Furnace HERO Athletes and post your question. Also, if you sign up as a HERO Coach, we will send you all the information you need.
How can i get others on board?
After you’ve requested to join our free Facebook group. All you have to do is invite all members that are in your organization so they stay updated on any information we post about our firefighter fitness assessment program.
